Why the noughties work so well

The first decade everyone filmed.

The 2000s was the decade choreography went properly mainstream. Every single came with a video, every video came with eight counts people copied in their bedrooms, and a surprising number of those counts are still in there somewhere. That is a gift for a hen party dance class: the group already half knows the vocabulary, so the choreographer can spend the session making it look sharp instead of explaining what a body roll is.

Sessions tend to sort themselves into two camps. The R&B side is low and groovy, weight in the knees, everything slightly behind the beat, and it teaches beautifully to a room that thinks it cannot dance because nothing is rushed. The pop-punk side is the opposite — jumping, pointing, shouting the chorus back at each other — and it suits a group who arrived with the volume already up. Either way it makes a forgiving dance hen party, because the style rewards feeling the beat more than hitting an exact shape, so the least confident hen in the room is rarely the one struggling. Most parties end up somewhere between the two, which is fine, and the choreographer decides how far to lean either way once she has seen who is actually in the room. No setlist gets promised before the day.

Bring the low-slung belts, the oversized sunglasses, the tracksuit if you must; nothing gets supplied by us, including shoes, so plan any costume between yourselves. Groups often pair the class with a walk down to the Comedy Carpet afterwards, which is about as good as a backdrop for the group photo gets. If your group would rather go back a decade the 90s class is right next door, and anyone who fancies something brighter and more posed should look at Barbie. Couples who like their choreographer often come back to us months later for a wedding first dance, which is how a fair few of these bookings start.

Included in the fee

Everything £185 plus the venue takes care of.

Most noughties groups take the longer session, and it shows in the last run. The only extra is hiring the function room, quoted openly before anything is confirmed, and there is no room to hire at all if we come to you. Call it a 2000s dance class hen party or a Blackpool 2000s dance hen party — the price is the same for the whole group.

What's included

  • Professional dance instructor
  • 2000s choreography built for your group
  • All music and sound equipment
  • Warm-up and cool-down
  • Beginner-friendly instruction

  • Eight counts pulled from the videos everyone copied at fourteen
  • A choreographer who adjusts the level once she sees the room

  • A closing performance run more than once so the video is good

Perfect for

  • Brides whose phone playlist has not moved on since 2006
  • Groups who want a hen party activity with an actual result at the end
  • Friends who would rather learn something than queue for a bar
  • A daytime slot that leaves the evening completely free

Roughly the running order

Ninety noughties minutes.

The first stretch is groove work, and it looks like almost nothing: weight shifting, knees soft, shoulders doing very little on purpose. It is the part that makes everything afterwards read properly, and it is also where a nervous room quietly relaxes, because nobody can be bad at it. Once the timing is in, the choreographer starts layering the actual phrases on top, four or eight counts at a time, looping each until the whole floor lands together.

After that it becomes a routine rather than a lesson. Sections get joined up, a chorus goes in twice because everyone shouts it anyway, and the bride gets her few counts wherever she wants them. Ninety minutes generally stretches to two full run-throughs and a photograph before anybody reaches for a coat. That is how a session tends to look rather than how it has to go; the day itself shuffles things about.

After the last run

What the noughties groups told us.

I have never seen my sister concentrate on anything the way she concentrated on that body roll. She is still practising it.

Nailed it. Filmed it. Sent it to the groom.

Fourteen of us, half hungover, and the teacher still got the whole room dancing in time before the first half hour was up.

We wanted the pop-punk side rather than the smooth stuff and that is exactly what we got, right down to the shouting. Best afternoon of the weekend by miles.

Worth knowing

2000s, answered.

IWhat music does the 2000s class actually use?

Noughties chart material, chosen with you rather than handed to you — R&B, pop, a bit of pop-punk if that is your group's temperature. The bride's favourite goes in wherever it fits. We never promise a setlist in advance because the room decides half of it on the day.

IICan total beginners keep up with a 2000s routine?

It is deliberately built for people who have not. The groove work at the start is slow and forgiving, the phrases are short, and everything is repeated far more often than you would expect. Groups regularly go from awkward to sharp inside an hour.

IIIDo you provide tracksuits or anything themed for the 2000s class?

No. We lend nothing out, not outfits, not props and not footwear, so anything noughties is yours to organise between you. What matters for the dancing is flat shoes and clothes you can move in. A group half in costume and half in leggings looks completely fine in the photos.

IVCan a 2000s hen do dance class work for a big group?

Yes, and the price stays flat whether there are nine of you or twenty-six. Larger groups get more formation work and a face-off section; smaller ones get more hands-on correction. Tell us the rough number in the enquiry and the choreographer plans around it.

VHow much of the 2000s class can we film?

As much as you like, and the last run exists partly for that. The ninety-minute booking is what makes that comfortable: two complete run-throughs, so nobody has to dance and film at the same time. Prop a phone somewhere sensible or hand the job to whoever is least keen on dancing.

VIWhereabouts do the classes usually happen?

Most often in the hired function room on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD), a short walk from both the Promenade and the Winter Gardens, and confirmed to you once the booking is made. Plenty of groups would rather not move at all, though, and for those we pack the sound gear and turn up wherever the weekend is based.
