Why a medley beats one show

Everybody gets their number in.

Picking a single show for a hen party is a reliable way to start a row, so most groups on our hen party dance class list end up here instead — a medley, stitched together from two or three shows the room genuinely cares about. The choreographer asks for a shortlist in advance, works out which numbers share a tempo, and builds something that moves between them. It means the bride's favourite gets its moment and so does the one her mum has now seen four times. Two shows is comfortable, three is ambitious, and four has been attempted, though something usually has to give.

Stage choreography is unusually kind to beginners, which is the other reason it works so well as a hen do dance class. Musical theatre is written to be read from the back of a large room, so the shapes are big and clear rather than fiddly: a step-touch with a proper arm on it looks like a hundred times more than it is. Expect a chorus-line section, a key-change moment where everything gets larger, and at least one pose held far longer than is dignified. Sequins, boas and top hats will be in every photograph if you bring them, and bring them you must — we don't supply costumes, props or shoes.

Blackpool is a decent town to do this in: the touring shows come through, the theatres are ten minutes from wherever you're standing, and a matinee makes an excellent second half to the day. If the group would rather commit to a single show, the Wicked class and the SIX class both do exactly that. Nobody in the room has to have actually seen any of the shows, incidentally — the group votes, the choreographer teaches, and the one person who has never sat through a musical in her life tends to be the loudest by the end. And if somebody finishes wanting more of it, the jazz end of our weekly classes in town is the obvious next step.

In the price

How ninety minutes tends to run

Three shows, one routine.

The warm-up is deliberately theatrical — posture, arms, faces — because half of musical theatre is committing to it in front of people. Then the first number goes in, taught in short phrases with the arms attached from the beginning rather than bolted on afterwards. Once that section is holding together the music changes and the second number arrives, usually at a different tempo, and that gear change is the bit that wakes everybody up.

The last stretch is all about the joins: how you get out of one show and into the next without the room falling apart, and where the big finish sits. The bride tends to take the front on the final chorus, or a line of her own if she'd rather share it out. Ninety minutes gives you two full runs and time to film the second. How it actually divides gets worked out with your group on the day — this is the usual pattern, not a promised running order.

Reviews from the chorus line.

We gave her four shows and she got three of them into one routine. My sister has watched the video more times than she'll admit to.

The practical bits

Musicals, answered honestly.

IWhich musicals can we ask for?

Whichever ones the group cares about — send a shortlist with the enquiry and the choreographer will tell you honestly which two or three sit together well. We aren't affiliated with any show; the routine is inspired by them rather than lifted from them.

IIDo we have to be able to sing?

No. Plenty of people sing along and nobody stops them, but the class is entirely about the dancing. If your group wants a musicals hen party activity with no singing in it whatsoever, this is exactly that.

IIIIs the musicals routine hard if we've never danced?

It's one of the friendlier themes for a room of beginners, because stage choreography is designed to be big and obvious. You'll be taught in short phrases and repeat each one until it sticks, and the whole thing gets pitched at whoever is finding it hardest.

IVWhat should we wear for the musicals class?

Something you can move and lift your arms in. Boas, sequins and top hats make the photographs, but they come with you — we don't supply costumes, props or shoes.

VIs a musicals dance hen party good for a wide age range?

It's one of the best hen party ideas we know for it, because a medley can reach back forty years. One number for the mums, one for the bride's friends, and everybody in the room knows at least half of it.

VIWe're staying on the front — where would the musicals class be?

Whichever suits you better. Parties with no space at their hotel use the function room we hire on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD), a couple of minutes from the Winter Gardens and walkable from the station; parties with a function room or a clearable lounge of their own have the class come to them instead.
