Why Flash Dance still works

Four minutes of film, ninety minutes of fun.

Almost nobody has watched the film recently and almost everybody can picture the audition. That is the whole appeal, and it is why the theme sits so comfortably on our hen party dance class list: the group arrives with an image already in their heads, and the choreographer only has to get twenty people close enough to it that the video makes them laugh. The steps borrow from eighties jazz and early aerobics — big travelling runs, a knee slide for anyone brave enough, arms flung skyward on the chorus — and they are deliberately show-off shapes, because that is exactly what the film is.

It builds. The first section is walkable, the second adds speed, and by the third the room is doing something that genuinely looks choreographed. That escalation is the fun of it, and also the reason the ninety minutes gets booked far more often than the hour. How far up the ladder your group climbs is decided on the day by a choreographer watching how the room copes; a hen do dance class of nine and one of twenty-five do not get the same version. Off-shoulder sweatshirts and leg warmers are a lovely touch, but bring your own — we do not supply costumes, props or shoes, and nobody is having water tipped over them.

Blackpool suits the theme's daftness. It is a town that does big gestures without apologising for them, and an afternoon of eighties audition choreography in a function room a few streets back from the Golden Mile fits the weekend exactly. Groups wanting the same era with more technique go for the Fame class; groups wanting it with more singing and more neon take the 80s class. And because the whole thing ends on a big, silly, arms-up freeze, it photographs a great deal better than most themes manage to. A fair few hens come back to our weekly classes once the weekend has worn off.

Included in the fee

What the whole group gets for £185 plus the venue.

Book it as a flash dance dance class hen party or a Blackpool flash dance dance hen party; either way nobody is charged per head.

How the time usually goes

Ninety minutes of build-up.

Price ticket · whole group
Ninety-minute workshopplus the venue£185
One-hour classplus the venue£160

The warm-up leans into the theme — eighties aerobics, more or less — so by the time anyone realises it has started, the room is already moving. The first phrase is deliberately easy and gets looped until everybody owns it, then the second arrives with more travel in it and the group is suddenly covering ground. Each block is repeated far more often than people expect, which is precisely why it sticks.

The back end is where it turns into the audition. Speed goes up, the arms get bigger, the finish gets rehearsed properly, and the bride is given her step forward if she wants it. With the ninety minutes there is room to perform the whole thing twice so the second one can be filmed, plus a group shot at the end. Treat all of that as the shape it usually takes. The real balance is decided on the day, once the choreographer has seen what your group can handle.

After the event

What the Flash Dance groups told us.

By the last run we looked as though we had rehearsed for a week. Thirteen women who had never danced together, and the final video is the best thing on my phone.

It gets harder as it goes, which sounds terrifying and is not. You do not notice until you look back at what you managed.

The bride refused to go out front. Then she went out front twice.

Arms up, everyone screaming. Perfect.

The usual questions

Flash Dance, answered.

IIs there a chair in the Flash Dance routine?

Not unless your venue happens to have one and everybody fancies it. We do not supply props, and the choreography is written to work on an empty floor. Nothing involves water either — that part stays in the film.

IIWhich songs does the Flash Dance class use?

The two obvious ones usually do the heavy lifting, with the title track saved for the finale because it is the bit everyone wants on video. Tell us if the bride has a preference and it will be worked in. There is no fixed setlist — the choreographer decides the order on the day.

IIIIs Flash Dance a workout?

More than most themes, yes, although it is paced so that nobody gets left behind. There is a proper warm-up, the difficulty climbs gradually, and anyone who wants to sit a section out simply does. Say in your enquiry if fitness varies a lot across the group.

IVWhat should we wear for a Flash Dance dance hen party?

Whatever you can move in — leggings, trainers, and an off-shoulder top if you are leaning into it. Costumes and shoes are not something we hand out, so themed kit is on you. Avoid heels, and avoid brand-new trainers with no grip on them.

VWould Flash Dance work as a hen party idea for a quieter group?

It can. The routine is built to escalate and the choreographer simply stops climbing where the room is comfortable, so a gentler version still ends with a big finish and a decent video. Groups who want something calmer from the outset often prefer a different theme, and we will say so if you ask.

VIWhere does the Flash Dance class run in Blackpool?

Normally the function room we hire on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD) — near enough to the Winter Gardens to walk it, with the station and the Promenade a few minutes off, and the room named in your booking confirmation. If your hotel, apartment or holiday let has a decent stretch of floor, we will bring the class to you instead, anywhere on the front or across the Fylde coast.
