Why Britney still fills a room

Muscle memory does half the work.

Everybody over about twenty-five has already learned some Britney choreography without noticing. Toxic in a kitchen, the schoolgirl arms at a wedding disco, the Oops sit-down at some point in a student union. That head start is exactly why it makes such a strong hen do dance class: the choreographer isn't teaching from nothing, they're tidying up something the room half-knows, and the result after ninety minutes looks a good deal better than the effort put into it. It sits near the front of our hen party dance class list for groups in their thirties, and Blackpool being Blackpool, plenty go straight from the class into a night out.

Technically it is commercial pop: clean lines, sharp stops, a little bounce, nothing acrobatic. The choreographer builds in eights and loops each one until the group can do it without watching, then threads them together with the iconic moves dropped in where they belong. There is usually a section with attitude and a section that is pure daftness, because that contrast is what makes the video funny. What you wear is entirely your call — costumes, shoes and props aren't supplied by us, so if the group has bought matching red catsuits or school ties, they came from your side rather than ours. Anybody uneasy about the livelier sections can be given a simpler version of the same eight counts, and it never shows up in the video.

As a dance hen party it suits people who want to laugh and still walk out with something that looks rehearsed. If polish matters more than nostalgia, the Beyoncé class is the sharper cousin; for something slower and more knowing, burlesque heads the opposite way. And if the couple fancy something rather more coordinated for the day itself, we teach wedding first dances too — a surprising number of those bookings begin with a hen weekend. It is also a hen party idea that fits a packed itinerary, since ninety minutes in the afternoon leaves the entire evening free.

What's covered

Where your £185 plus the venue goes.

The ninety-minute workshop is the one most Britney groups book, mainly because the famous bits deserve doing properly. Room hire is the only additional cost, quoted before you say yes, and there is none of it when we come to your hotel. Whether you searched for a britney dance class hen party or a britney dance hen party in Blackpool, this is the one flat-fee version.

What's included

  • Professional dance instructor
  • Britney choreography built for your group
  • All music and sound equipment
  • Warm-up and cool-down
  • Beginner-friendly instruction
  • Photo and video opportunities
  • Help picking the theme and the song
  • Group coordination beforehand
  • A spotlight moment for the bride

What you'll experience

  • A Britney routine drawn from whichever era your group votes for
  • Eight-counts drilled properly before anything gets joined up
  • The famous moves worked in wherever they suit the group
  • A choreographer reading the room and changing pace to match
  • A spotlight beat for the bride, as loud or quiet as she likes
  • A final run done twice, the second one for filming

Perfect for

  • Anyone who learned Toxic off a music video in 2003
  • Groups in their thirties who want the nostalgia hit
  • A bride after a real routine rather than a party game
  • Hen weekends that end up along the Prom afterwards
  • Mixed-confidence parties where two or three can already do it
  • Afternoons needing a better hen party activity than another bar

The shape of the session

Ninety minutes of Britney.

The warm-up is a pop routine in miniature — a few counts of something familiar, so the room works out early on that it can already do this. Then the choreographer starts on the real material, building in eights, slowing everything down and running each section far more times than feels necessary. That repetition is the entire trick; it is why the last run looks sharp.

The second half is where the moves everyone was waiting for get slotted in, and where the routine gets a proper ending instead of trailing off. With the ninety-minute workshop there's time to perform it twice and to hand the bride a moment out front if she wants one. Treat that as the usual rhythm rather than a timetable — how the ninety minutes actually divides is decided with your group on the day.

Verdicts from the group.

We spent the first ten minutes arguing about which era and the next eighty getting it right. Toxic won.

Good to know

Britney, answered.

IWhich Britney songs will the routine use?

Usually a couple from whichever era the group leans towards — Baby One More Time, Oops!... I Did It Again and Toxic are the regulars. It gets agreed with you rather than handed to you, and there is no fixed setlist: the choreographer confirms it on the day.

IIDo we need to be good dancers?

No, and most groups aren't. Pop choreography gets taught in eights and repeated until it's automatic, and the moves people half-know already give everyone a head start. If somebody is struggling, the choreographer simplifies their part instead of leaving them behind.

IIIWill it work for a group of really mixed ages?

It works because the music does the heavy lifting — the bride's mates, her mum and her twelve-year-old cousin all recognise it. The routine can be pitched clean and family-friendly, or given considerably more attitude; tell us which when you book.

IVDo we need costumes for the Britney hen party class?

Only if you want them. Red catsuits, school ties and anything else lifted from the videos look great in photographs, but costumes, shoes and props are not things we supply — that side is yours to organise. Leggings and trainers are what most of the room dances in regardless.

VCan we film the routine at the end?

Yes — the final run is deliberately a performance rather than a rehearsal. Book the ninety minutes and there's normally room to do it twice, once for yourselves and once with phones up. We'd suggest choosing your camera person before everybody is out of breath.

VIWhereabouts in Blackpool is the Britney class taught?

In a function room we hire in Blackpool town centre — Hornby Road, FY1 4RD — a couple of streets from the Winter Gardens and walkable from the station and the seafront; the exact room is confirmed once you book. Staying somewhere with space along the Promenade or out on the Fylde coast? We'll bring the class to your hotel or apartment.
